2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Reviews and Insights

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 4xe: The Grand Cherokee you know and love is now available as a plug-in hybrid.

PROS: Available in four trims that range from basic to luxurious; compelling driving experience; and impressive off-roading capabilities.

CONS: Not as efficient as other plug-in hybrids; cargo is not as spacious as the competition; and far more expensive than rivals.

VERDICT: It's exciting to see a plug-in hybrid option available for the beloved Grand Cherokee, but it falls short of our expectations.

Does it have any competitors or rivals?

Ford Escape PHEV, Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV, GMC Hummer EV, and Toyota Rav4 Prime

What’s interesting about the GRAND CHEROKEE 4xe?

- Like the Grand Cherokee WK, the 4xe also has two rows and seats up to five.

- All four trims get powered by a 375-horsepower engine-motor combination.

- The 4xe can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.

- Several safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear parking sensors, come standard.

How about the prices and trims?

The Grand Cherokee comes in five models, similar to the Grand Cherokee WK. (Don't confuse the WK with the L, a three-row version of the Grand Cherokee.) The base trim starts at just over $58,000 and the Trailhawk costs $62,880. Next, Overland has a price tag of $66,155 and Summit adds just over $3,600 to that. Lastly, Summit Reserve is the most expensive at $75,000.

In general, we're thrilled to see another plug-in hybrid join the ranks of environmentally-friendly SUVs. However, this is a vehicle aimed at individuals and families with an active lifestyle. Unless you're going on adventures on weekends and plan on towing trailers, do yourself a favor and check out other PHEV models.

Which one do we recommend?

We think the Overland trim provides the best for the price you pay, compared to the other 4xe trims. This trim also opens the door for adding more high-end trims.

What about its availability?

The 4xe should arrive in dealerships sometime in Spring, so keep your eyes peeled and check in with your local store.

What about its performance and handling?

- Though the Grand Cherokee 4xe has a hybrid engine, the driving experience is smooth and confident.

- All engine-motor combinations get paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.

- The combined prowess of the hybrid system generates 375 horsepower, while the motors alone generate 270 horsepower.

- When properly equipped, the 4xe can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The 4xe offers a comfortable and easygoing driving experience despite its size and considerable weight. Drivers should have no problem driving on backroads or in the city. Both the Trailhawk and Summit trims come with an electronic limited-slip differential and an advanced FWD system to support off-roading. Yet, for a hybrid electric vehicle, the fuel efficiency is low. The electric driving range is 25 mpge on a full charge, which is better than the Grand Cherokee WK. Still, that is very low compared to similarly-sized vehicles with less powerful engines.

How’s the interior?

Cabin Space

Much like the regular 2022 Grand Cherokee, the interior of the 4xe is both stylish and ergonomic in its design. If you choose a higher trim level, such as the Overland or Summit, you'll have access to a more luxurious interior. The leather seats are comfortable even on long drives, and adults will have no problem sitting in the backseat. Unfortunately, the cargo area is only average compared to similarly-sized SUVs. One way to combat that is to use the 40/60-split-folding rear seat to load cargo. Shoppers interested in a larger version of this vehicle should read our review of the Grand Cherokee L.

Infotainment and connectivity

The base trim and the Trailhawk come with an 8.4-inch touchscreen that includes Uconnect, Android Auto, AppleCarPlay, USB ports, and satellite radio. The crisp graphics and intuitive system make navigating between programs and listening to your favorite tunes easy. Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve come with a 10-inch touchscreen that features a navigation program, an optional 10-inch touchscreen for the passenger, and upgraded sound systems.

LIKES: We're big fans of Uconnect and think most drivers will find it easy to use.

DISLIKES: Some optional features are only available as a package.

How about the technology and features?

LIKES: Features such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, park assistant, and lane-keeping assist come standard even on the base trims. An integrated off-road camera comes standard on the Trailhawk and Summit trims, making it ideal for active drivers.

DISLIKES: Even though the high-end trims are off-roading ready, you're probably going to add an extra package or two to spruce things up more for your next adventure.

Quick Quirks: Because the Grand Cherokee is a large and heavy SUV, a low battery will make the drive slightly sluggish.

Some additional features include:

- All 4xe models come with a Level 1 EV 120-volt charger, which requires 12 hours for a full charge.

- An optional Level 2 EV 240-volt charger is available, and it only requires two hours for a full charge.

- Features such as a dual-pane sunroof, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel come standard on high-end trims.

- An optional rear-seat entertainment system comes with two 10-inch touchscreens and access to Amazon Fire.

How’s the exterior?

The Grand Cherokee 4xe looks very similar to the regular 2022 Grand Cherokee, save for a few accents that will get bystanders curious about what you're driving. There's no question that this SUV is ready for hauling friends and trailers, thanks to the confident front grille, prominent wheels, and no-nonsense vibe. Yet, this model retains certain elements that make it clear you're driving a Jeep and not some other brand. If you've been a Jeep fan for a while, you don't have to worry that going electric will change the look you love.

What warranty and safety does it offer?

Many safety features come standard and the Grand Cherokee 4xe includes an average warranty package.

- As of this writing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not provided a rating for the Grand Cherokee 4xe.

- Many safety features come standard, such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. High-end trims include night vision, a 360-degree camera, and an off-road camera.

- Limited warranty for 36,000 miles or three years.

- Electric powertrain warranty for 60,000 miles or five years.

- Complimentary scheduled maintenance for 60,000 miles or five years.
